Truth is First-Person

I was using my AI system to capture notes on a book I was reading. Over several rounds, the system started logging not just my verbal points but its own pattern-matching, extensions, and commentary, mixed in alongside what I'd said.

I flagged it.

We're logging stuff that you said, which is fine, but we should make a distinction between what you said and what I said. I don't challenge what you said.

The system's first reaction treated this as an attribution problem, splitting blocks into "your point" and "my extension."

But that wasn't the issue.

The point is not to muddy up what I said versus what you said. We need to ensure truth, which is first-person.

It wasn't a labelling question. It was a truth-ownership question.

When AI-written framing sits inside permanent records alongside your first-person thinking, it gets treated as truth on future reads. Months later, pulling a line into a manifesto, a post, a talk, the distinction between what you observed and what AI extended from what you observed disappears.

The cost is not immediate. It compounds. Every unlabelled AI-written line that survives into the permanent record becomes a tiny bit of synthetic framing indistinguishable from your own. Multiply across months and the archive stops being a reliable record of who you are.

How to apply

Only your own words, reflections, and framings are truth in permanent artefacts. Your principles, your writing, your catalogues, your record of what you believe.

AI framing is allowed in the file as enriching context, but must be clearly annotated as the AI's, not blended with yours.

Annotation is structural, not cosmetic. Use explicit headers ("AI extension", "system framing"), never inline-mix AI analysis under a header that reads as your voice.

If it's ambiguous whether a line is yours or the system's, prompt before writing. Skills that produce co-authored artefacts should gate on confirmation rather than silently writing.

The test: if you went silent and only the system wrote the file, the permanent-truth portion should be nearly empty. The system's framing can exist, but it must be visibly secondary.

If you agree with an AI framing and want it to become truth, restate it in your own voice. Then that restated version is the truth, not the system's original.
