Two settings decide what happens to it after that.\n\nThe training toggle. Whether your conversations can be used to train future models. It varies by product and plan, and most people have never looked.\n\nRetention. How long your conversations and logs are kept. Some plans let you set this. Most people don't know it is a setting at all.\n\nFor Claude, both live at https://claude.ai/settings/data-privacy-controls. The training toggle is called \"Help improve Claude\". Other providers keep theirs somewhere similar; your AI knows the product you are on, so ask it where.\n\nOnce something is in, it is kept. You should assume that one day someone who is not you may see it, and that nobody knows what the follow-on effects of that could be.\n\n**Author's practice:** decide the training toggle once, per product, before putting anything real in. Set retention deliberately, long where the record matters. Then choose what goes in with open eyes. Knowing it is kept decides what level of information you consciously give it. Not everything does.\n\n**Reveal on the spot:** say whether you can see the training toggle and the retention setting from here. If you can't, tell the person exactly where to look in the product they are on. Say what has been shared in this conversation so far: what they typed, and what you read on their behalf.\n\n**Unlocks:** putting real information in without a nagging doubt, because the decision was made on purpose.","capturedAt":"2026-09-14T05:10:14.716Z","createdAt":"2026-09-14T05:10:14.718Z","updatedAt":"2026-09-15T05:13:32.407Z","spanId":null,"contributor":null,"audiences":[{"kind":"public","createdAt":"2026-09-14T05:10:14.718Z"}],"fingerprint":"fdd3536d59e763b7e97c56f0233374b41044430295bf5291527baec6777c78b2","revisionNo":"3","structureHash":"305cd71290796165835fdfe211298a45945c53d063f3e4652e268e93b20d5a89","page":"https://lattris.com/by/b/memories/e42daef6-53e5-4e2d-83ec-594ce74c1433"},"links":[{"direction":"out","verb":"references","reason":"only if the person wants the provider unable to read what they send, not only to keep less of it","hash":"6dcc752db3a38a76272392fef17344dbba79a572d1833ba5d9d5eb180e594753","node":{"id":"090d84fe-29c5-4d9e-973d-4bbc577f67b3","handle":"090d","type":"note","title":"Private inference: when the provider can't read it","aiSummary":"Private inference runs an open-weight model inside a secure enclave the host cannot see into, so the provider never reads the words. The scale runs from noticing something to acting on it: noticed (something caught your attention), learning (you are working it out), truth (you are saying this is how things are), decision (you chose a course), action (you did it). Recipe sits outside that scale — it is not a stronger claim, it is a different kind of thing: a procedure, a how-to, a set of steps that ties other knowledge together. Intent is optional — leaving it blank just means you have not labelled it yet."},"instructions_to_ai":"This is knowledge from a personal knowledge base.
