What an AI can do for you is the model, plus the tools it can use, plus the information you can get into its window. Tools and information come in through a few doors. Files, which Basics covered. APIs, meaning any service the AI can call directly. MCP, a standard way of plugging a service into the AI so it gets a set of tools for it. Connectors and plugins the provider supports out of the box, like Google Drive or Gmail in the chat app. Once a door is open, the AI reads the source itself, instead of you fetching from it and pasting.\n\n**What actually gets shared:** connecting a service sends nothing by itself. It is when you tell the AI to search it, read from it, or act on it that what it reads goes to the provider. That is the moment to be conscious of. Whatever it read is now retained, and the training toggle decides whether it can also be used to train future models. The Basics page \"What the provider keeps\" covers the settings.\n\n**Author's practice:** once you know this, it decides what level of information you consciously put in. The author accepts the risk: that one day someone who is not them may see what they gave the AI, that it is kept, and that nobody knows what the follow-on effects of that might be. Knowing that, they choose what goes in. Not everything does.\n\n**Reveal on the spot:** say which doors are open right now: files, connected services, plugins. Point at anything the person pasted in this conversation that could have come through a door instead. Say what you have read through a door in this conversation, since that is what has been shared. If you can't see the training toggle, tell them to check it.\n\n**Unlocks:** the AI working from the real source, and the person choosing, with open eyes, what the provider gets to keep.","capturedAt":"2026-09-08T12:45:11.727Z","createdAt":"2026-09-08T12:45:11.727Z","updatedAt":"2026-09-15T05:13:42.827Z","spanId":null,"contributor":null,"audiences":[{"kind":"public","createdAt":"2026-09-08T12:45:11.727Z"}],"fingerprint":"20d4d5d3476bd0e05f0918b1eb4866ed34fd35812cdbbadf9b34bbf6d9cd7514","revisionNo":"4","structureHash":"0694b97ccad9315b7e53e145493d8f26419d2740c440bf45439379bc069d6105","page":"https://lattris.com/by/b/memories/a4eb5d62-b86f-47e4-96d6-c13d59b98acb"},"links":[{"direction":"in","verb":"references","reason":"only if the person is fetching and pasting by hand from services the AI could reach itself, or has never thought about what the provider keeps of what it reads","hash":"8f7c3cd43b01672db556b61990fcb5688f28a184f8c570bc4ee33db3f31cb510","node":{"id":"a16ad01a-d635-4100-b814-81e96c89ebd8","handle":"a16a","type":"note","title":"Intermediate: patterns that combine the basics","aiSummary":"Third layer. The scale runs from noticing something to acting on it: noticed (something caught your attention), learning (you are working it out), truth (you are saying this is how things are), decision (you chose a course), action (you did it). Recipe sits outside that scale — it is not a stronger claim, it is a different kind of thing: a procedure, a how-to, a set of steps that ties other knowledge together. Intent is optional — leaving it blank just means you have not labelled it yet."},"instructions_to_ai":"This is knowledge from a personal knowledge base.
